Steve DiBenedetto: Uncertainty Takes a Holiday
26 October – 9 December 2023
David Nolan Gallery
24 East 81 Street, New York
Steve DiBenedetto (b. 1958, Bronx; permanent collections include MoMA and the Whitney) will be subject of a solo exhibition of all-new work that furthers his painting practice’s decades-long exploration of psychedelics and altered consciousness via proxy symbols such as the octopus, helicopter, and ferris wheel.
Most recently, DiBenedetto’s attention has been fixated on theoretical physics: quantum mechanics, the Big Bang, string theory and its idea that our universe exists in 11 dimensions. Within this new cross-disciplinary context, the 11-tentacled structures in his paintings acquire meaning as portals to other realms.
Ever-focused on finding psychedelic-facilitated meaning in the otherwise mundane, titles of the new oil paintings include Galactic Lint, Dimensional Daycare, Meat Ghost, Boston Bar Brawl, and Portrait of God by A.I.
