Barnaby Furnas: Tower of Song
26 October – 22 December 2023
Marianne Boesky Gallery
509 West 24 Street, New York
In each of the six new paintings by Barnaby Furnas (b. 1973; Philadelphia, PA)—all set in a studio nominally based on the Furnas's own Philadelphia workshop—an artist stands before an easel, holding an array of brushes, their workbenches littered with paint palettes and potted plants and vases of flowers. The in-progress canvases on the artists' easels reference the work of Georgia O'Keeffe and Helen Frankenthaler as well as to Furnas's early monochrome flood paintings.
With the gestural brushwork, rich colors, and tangible dynamism for which Furnas is known, these paintings nevertheless represent a shift in the painter's practice inspired by his recent return to his hometown of Philadelphia.
