TEFAF Maastricht 2025
March 13 - 20
Marianne Boesky Gallery, Stand 444
For TEFAF Maastricht, Marianne Boesky Gallery will present eight fresh-from-studio works by Danielle Mckinney in dialogue with the work of Edward Hopper. Hopper is a perennial influence of Mckinney's, particularly with relation to the use of light and themes of solitude. It is the gallery's first time participating in the art fair, as well as Danielle Mckinney's exhibition debut in the Netherlands.
Situating solitary figures in meticulously crafted settings, Mckinney draws on the striking, cinematic quality of light and shadow and the intense, unsettling voyeurism so characteristic of Hopper’s painting. The “palpable presence” of light that curator Barbara Haskel identifies in Hopper’s work is also present in Mckinney’s intimate canvases.
Mckinney's figures are defined, in large part, by their solitude. Comfortably nude, or wrapped in cozy bedding or lustrous, silky nightclothes, Mckinney’s figures—like Hopper’s—appear lost in their own thoughts, entirely unaware of their own being watched. Yet, both offer rich psychological studies of their subjects. Perhaps what most closely links these two artists, working nearly a century apart, is the emotional resonance they inspire in viewers.
