Frieze London 2023
Marianne Boesky Gallery, Booth G16

Marianne Boesky Gallery is pleased to present a solo booth of new paintings by Danielle Mckinney, and a Frieze Sculpture presentation of a new work by Sanford Biggers (the latter of which is co-presented with MASSIMODECARLO).

The booth marks Danielle Mckinney’s first U.K. solo presentation. The paintings cinematically depict solitary female protagonists in moments of leisure and respite. Set in dream-like domestic interiors, Mckinney’s figures sprawl across unmade beds, lounge in overstuffed armchairs, and splay on the floor in various states of undress. They smoke, read, nap; immersed in their own worlds, ensconced in their own space, these women are consumed with rest, pleasure, leisure, and simply being.

For the Frieze Sculpture presentation, Sanford Biggers debuts Cheshire (Janus) (2023), a suspended lightbox sculpture in the form of a mouth that thematically juxtaposes the disembodied 'Cheshire Cat' grin with racist caricatures of circa-1860s minstrel shows. Biggers complicates and questions these signifiers, ultimately offering new understandings of collective mythologies and traditions.
