David Nolan Gallery is pleased to announce Bodies, a new exhibition that brings together three intergenerational artists who are united by their strong interest in pattern, design, figuration, and the human body. It features Ray Yoshida (1930 - 2009), who grew up in Hawaii during the civil upheaval of World War II; Christina Ramberg (1946 - 1995), who was raised on a military base in Kentucky amid the socio-political backdrop of the Vietnam War; and Deborah Druick (b. 1951), who came of age in Canada during the height of the feminist movement.
The work spans cartoon-esque depictions of the pubic region to stylized representations of complex human conditions like isolation. Imperfections and beauty ideals are both explored, throughout prime examples of each artist's zeitgeist (particularly, in the case of Yoshida and Ramberg, the cross-pollinating cohort of the Chicago Imagists). Deborah Druick's work, meanwhile, draws formal parallels with Yoshida and Ramberg, but offers a unique perspective in her capacity as a still-practicing artist translating similar stylistic sensibilities beyond the Me Too movement and with an evolving contemporary sense of representations of the female condition.
