Following MoMA board member Glenn Fuhrman’s and LionTree’s late-2020 investments in The Baer Faxt “to allow it to expand into new channels and pursue other growth opportunities that will further broaden its reach,” The Baer Faxt is pleased to announce the inaugural offering from its expanded product portfolio: The Baer Faxt Auction Database, a new essential resource for the art market, containing an index of buyer and underbidder identities for nearly 10,000 unique works of art sold between 1996 and present.
“If only we had The Baer Faxt Auction Database when I was CEO at Sotheby’s,” said Tad Smith, one of the product’s beta testers. “The efficiency of capturing real leads to potential sales will be a game-changing tool in the business.”
The Database will enable the art world to transact with unprecedented levels of transparency and efficiency, and among other areas of impact, will create countless new transaction opportunities that wouldn’t otherwise have a basis to exist. Have a Warhol to sell? Just browse “underbidders” under the Warhol query to find a list of individuals who have previously sought a Warhol. Looking to buy one? Even easier -- you can now find out where they are and make an offer. Curating a Rauschenberg exhibition? Researching Jasper Johns’ market? Thousands of leads on the whereabouts of individual artworks, at the click of a mouse. Naturally, the Database will also lift the lid off many long-held artworks, bringing them back to the public realm; at some point, you may find yourself enjoying an artwork in a museum specifically because someone found it in the Database and thought to make an attractive offer.
The Baer Faxt Auction Database is intended to be used in tandem with more comprehensive price databases, as its value rests in the proprietary data points of buyers and underbidders. An intro video is linked here.
Few individuals can cite a deeper immersion in the 1970s-to-present New York art scene than Josh Baer. As a nonprofit director then gallerist in the 1980s, Baer had the foresight to nurture the careers of artists including Lorna Simpson and Nancy Spero. And when he decided to launch his eponymous weekly newsletter in November 1994, David Zwirner was his first subscriber. Now, Baer, an avid philanthropist whose annual Baer Faxt Invitational golf tournament has to date raised millions for Avenues for Justice, continues to work as a private art advisor who has facilitated over $500M in transactions.
What started as a fax-based newsletter in 1994 and was subsequently dispatched from Josh Baer’s personal AOL email account for over a decade, The Baer Faxt brand retains its "old-school" prestige (and of course its flagship newsletter) but has entered a new era with innovative product offerings that leverage the rich heritage, credibility, and integrity it has become known for over nearly three decades.
