Tu Hongtao: Beyond Babel
22 February - 30 March 2024
Lévy Gorvy Dayan
19 East 64 Street
Lévy Gorvy Dayan is pleased to present Tu Hongtao: Beyond Babel, which marks Tu Hongtao (b. 1976)'s first New York solo exhibition, following two presentations of Tu's work by Lévy Gorvy in London (2020) and Hong Kong (2019). Said gallery partner Brett Gorvy, who organized the upcoming exhibition:
“I first encountered Tu's work in person at a survey show of his at the Long Museum in Shanghai. I was impressed by his ability to combine his profound knowledge of traditional Chinese paintings with a clear understanding of Western techniques and gestural expressions. I could understand Tu's work through the lens of Paul Cézanne, Joan Mitchell, and Cy Twombly; and yet I could see and feel his own authentic voice.”
The new exhibition draws primarily on the theme of the Tower of Babel, and on George Steiner's well-known 1975 text After Babel, to explore ideas of communication and mistranslation across cultures. Tu Hongtao: Beyond Babel presents sweeping compositions in sumptuous hues that advance the artist’s use of abstraction as a means to engage with memory, landscape, and society — as well as art history, theory, and poetry of the East and West.
