Sanford Biggers: The Gift of Tongues
30 April - 13 June 2026
Marianne Boesky Gallery
507 West 24th Street
Marianne Boesky is pleased to present The Gift of Tongues, an exhibition of all-new work by Sanford Biggers (b. 1970 in Los Angeles, CA) in the form of an immersive labyrinth of curtains and false walls punctuated by individual artworks.
The body of work furthers Biggers' melding of motifs including traditional African masks, European busts, clouds, and classical figures to explore historical representations of the body, along with their myths, archetypes, and power dynamics.
For The Gift of Tongues, Biggers transforms the gallery into a playhouse of sorts, reconfiguring the white cube of the gallery into an intricate labyrinth of strategically placed curtains and false walls. Amidst this carefully constructed backdrop, distinct vignettes emerge, revealing themselves in careful sightlines as viewers find their way through the gallery. Populated with new works from his Codex, Chimera, and Shimmer series, these scenes bring together disparate bodies of work to reveal an elaborate web of historic reckoning and narrative possibility.
